“KTMB begins trial runs for the ETS extension to Kluang, aiming to expand electric train services in southern Malaysia. Full rollout to Johor Bahru will proceed in phases.”

Kuala Lumpur, 04th August 2025, 01.20pm – Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) has confirmed that trial runs are currently in progress for the next phase of its Electric Train Service (ETS) extension to Kluang, Johor, as part of the broader southern corridor rail expansion plan.

In a statement issued on Sunday, KTMB said it is working closely with contractors and authorities to ensure the Kluang segment becomes operational as soon as all safety and regulatory requirements are met.

This follows public interest sparked by recent media reports on the ETS extension from Segamat to Johor Bahru (JB). KTMB reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a safe, efficient, and transformative rail experience for southern Malaysia.

“As Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook previously announced, the ETS extension will be implemented in phases—beginning with Segamat, followed by Kluang, and ultimately reaching JB Sentral. Each stage depends on the completion of critical technical milestones and regulatory approvals,” the statement read.

KTMB emphasized that safety, reliability, and operational readiness are top priorities before any new route is opened to the public.

The ETS service to Segamat has been operating successfully since March 2025, offering enhanced travel convenience and contributing to local economic development.

“We thank our passengers, local communities, and stakeholders for their continued support and patience. KTMB remains fully committed to expanding ETS access to the southern region, ensuring modern, high-quality rail services for all,” the company said.
