KUALA LUMPUR, 5th Feb 2024 – The global interest in major cities across Asia is expected to rise in the current year, and Kuala Lumpur has successfully earned its position among the top 10 trending global travel destinations, as indicated by reviews from global travelers on Tripadvisor.
As per Tripadvisor’s assessments, Asia dominates the list of emerging travel hotspots for 2024, claiming the top five spots in the global trending destinations. These destinations highlight areas that have experienced the most significant year-over-year growth in interest, with eight out of the top 10 being Asian cities.
In the current year, Kuala Lumpur has achieved the 10th position in the global trending destinations, with Tokyo, Japan securing the top spot. The subsequent positions are held by Seoul, South Korea (second); Halong Bay, Vietnam (third); Palawan Islands, Philippines (fourth); Sapa, Vietnam (fifth); Bogota, Colombia in South America (sixth); Pattaya, Thailand (seventh); Alajuela, Costa Rica in Central America (eighth); and Phnom Penh, Cambodia (ninth).
Kuala Lumpur has also attained the sixth position on the roster of the most frequently visited cities, with a cumulative count of 13.79 million international visitors reported as of 2018. This information is derived from the Global Destination Cities Index 2019, conducted by the global payment technology corporation Mastercard. The index assesses cities based on their total international overnight visitor arrivals and cross-border spending. Notably, Kuala Lumpur is the headquarters location of Petronas, a company listed in the annual Fortune Global 500, currently ranking 139 as of 2023.
The visual identity of the Kuala Lumpur city center is marked by the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, standing at 88 stories high, making them the tallest twin buildings globally and an emblem of modern architecture. Additionally, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, distinguished as the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia, graces the cityscape with its facade, resembling a vibrant totem pole of iconography.
Last month, Tripadvisor unveiled the Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Destination Awards, revealing the world’s most prominent trending destinations for 2024. The rankings were established by evaluating the quality and quantity of reviews submitted by global travelers regarding accommodations, restaurants, and activities posted on Tripadvisor between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023.
