KUALA LUMPUR, 16th May 2024

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has mandated the planting of 100 new trees for each unnecessary tree removed in the city.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar stated that he has given this directive to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh.

“I have directed the Mayor that for each tree that needs to be felled, 100 new trees must be planted,” Anwar stated.

Anwar’s comments were in response to a Bernama news report published on Monday (May 13). The report quoted the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, regarding actions taken by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) after a large tree was uprooted during a recent thunderstorm, resulting in the death of a motorist.

Dr. Zaliha stated that DBKL has been directed to promptly remove trees that are at risk of being uprooted following the recent incident.

She also mentioned that DBKL has been instructed to enhance the Shade Tree Management Plan and to create new guidelines for managing aging or high-risk trees. These guidelines are expected to be finalized by July to prevent similar incidents in the future.
