In a significant update today, the MRT Corporation provided a comprehensive briefing to the State Development Action Council regarding the progress of the LRT project. As a result, they have proposed several refinements to the initial plans crafted by the SRS Consortium, including adjustments to the LRT connection to Penang Sentral. “After receiving the briefing, the state government proposed convening a workshop with key stakeholders to solidify the lineup due to some proposed amendments,” he stated.
He made this announcement following Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo’s Raya open house, which also saw the presence of the Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, and his wife, Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Noor, on Thursday night.
Chow emphasized the importance of finalizing the alignment to pave the way for subsequent tasks such as land acquisition, design, and station placements.
He outlined plans to establish multiple working committees comprising representatives from the state government, MRT Corp, and other relevant agencies tasked with overseeing the project’s advancement. These committees will delve into technical intricacies to ensure the project progresses in alignment with the designated timeline.
He further conveyed gratitude to MRT Corp for their invaluable contributions, spanning across operational strategies, maintenance plans, early contractor involvement (ECI), optimal bridge crossings, integrated depot design, and cost-effectiveness.
On March 29, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook declared the official transfer of the Penang Mutiara Line LRT project from the state government to the Federal government. MRT Corporation was subsequently entrusted with the role of developer and asset owner.
The project procurement is segmented into three primary components: civil construction works for Segment 1, encompassing the Pulau Silikon to Komtar alignment; civil construction works for Segment 2, covering the line from Komtar to Penang Sentral; and a ‘turnkey contract’ for system and carriage (coach) works.
