The government raises rooftop solar quotas under NEM, extends the SolaRIS rebate to April 2025, and expands eligibility for agriculture users, advancing Malaysia’s renewable energy goals.

Kuala Lumpur, 24th Dec 2024, 10.42am – The government has announced an increase in rooftop solar quotas under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme to support renewable energy adoption for households and businesses.

Under the enhanced NEM Rakyat programme, the quota for households will rise by 150 megawatts (MW), bringing the total to 600MW. Similarly, the commercial and industrial segment (NEM Nova) will see an increase of 300MW, reaching 1,700MW.

In addition, the Solar Incentive Scheme for the People (SolaRIS), which offers a rebate of up to RM4,000 for residential solar installations, will be extended until April 30, 2025, subject to eligibility criteria.

Households with existing rooftop solar installations under earlier mechanisms can now upgrade their systems to benefit from the current NEM programme. Furthermore, the NEM scheme has been expanded to include agricultural electricity users.

The application deadline for NEM quotas has been extended to June 30, 2025, or until the quotas are fully allocated, whichever occurs first. These updates, alongside the extended SolaRIS scheme, will come into effect on January 1, 2025.

“The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) remains committed to ensuring the success of solar installation initiatives on rooftops, contributing to the National Energy Transition target of achieving a 70% renewable energy capacity mix in the country’s electricity supply by 2050,” the ministry said in a statement.

This initiative is a significant step toward fostering renewable energy adoption and reducing dependency on non-renewable energy sources nationwide.
