“KPKT invites state governments to propose prime land for the People’s Residence Programme, with plans to fund developments while retaining state land ownership.“
Melaka, 18th Oct 2024, 02.28pm – State governments with land in prime locations suitable for the People’s Residence Programme (PRR) can propose these lands to the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT).
According to KPKT deputy secretary-general for housing and community wellbeing, Suhaimi Ali, the federal government will strive to secure development funding without requiring the state governments to transfer their land to the Federal Land Commissioner.
“This initiative is intended to expedite the housing construction process across the country, in line with KPKT’s commitment to providing homes that meet high standards of comfort, safety, and livability,” he said.
“The key focus is ensuring that the housing projects developed by the federal government adhere to the MADANI principles, which encompass sustainability, creativity, confidence, well-being, respect, and compassion,” said Suhaimi Ali during his speech at the PRR key handover ceremony in Tangga Batu. The event was officiated by Datuk Rais Yasin, senior chairman of the state Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change, and Disaster Management Committee.
He also shared that the ministry plans to construct 200 PRR housing units in Bukit Katil next year. So far, the federal government, through KPKT, has completed five PRR projects in Melaka, delivering a total of 1,556 housing units.
Suhaimi further explained that of the total units, 600 are being developed at PRR Krubong, 500 at PRR Tehel, 336 at PRR Sungai Putat, and 120 at PRR Tangga Batu.
“Another project, PRR Klebang, which includes the construction of 255 units, is currently in progress and is expected to be completed by 2025,” Suhaimi Ali stated.
He urged both prospective and current tenants to maintain cleanliness in their homes and surrounding areas to foster a conducive neighborhood. Suhaimi also encouraged tenants to fully utilize the opportunity to own these homes, cautioning against subletting them or turning them into homestays.
At a press conference following the event, Datuk Rais Yasin mentioned that the state government aims to extend the Rent-to-Own scheme to all PRR developments in Melaka, allowing citizens to transition from long-term renting to homeownership. He noted that, to date, only PRR Krubong and PRR Tehel have been approved to implement this scheme for their tenants.
