“KL subsidence on Jalan Sultan Ismail, caused by a burst pipe, is under repair with completion expected within 24 hours, according to Air Selangor.”
Kuala Lumpur, 23th Sept 2024, 01.17pm – The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) reported that the subsidence on Jalan Sultan Ismail, which was widely shared in a viral video, was caused by a burst underground pipe early Monday morning.
Senior Fire Officer 1 Mohd Rozihafizam Othman, who led the operations, stated that the department received an emergency call at 5:04 am, prompting the dispatch of 13 firefighters to the scene.
Upon arrival, they discovered that the subsidence was triggered by a leak from an underground pipe owned by Air Selangor, which resulted in water overflow and affected several nearby areas.
“The responsibility for repairing the burst pipe has been assigned to Air Selangor,” stated Senior Fire Officer 1 Mohd Rozihafizam Othman in a press release.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) also announced on its Facebook page that Air Selangor is conducting the repair work.
“Repairs to the uneven road surface, caused by water pressure, will commence at 8pm tonight and are expected to be completed by 5am tomorrow,” DBKL added.
Earlier, a 10-second video showing what appeared to be a pothole on Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur went viral on social media.
In a statement, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) confirmed that the incident was due to a burst pipe, not a sinkhole as some have claimed.
The statement mentioned that repair work was completed by 5pm on Monday, and road resurfacing in the affected areas is currently in progress, with an expected completion time of within 24 hours, depending on weather conditions.
“A burst pipe can typically cause road damage in the surrounding area due to the high water pressure in the pipe system,” the statement explained.
