“KLIA’s upgraded aerotrain resumes full operations after a RM456 million revamp, boosting speed, comfort, and readiness for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.”
Kuala Lumpur, 02nd July 2025, 02.37pm – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim praised the newly upgraded KLIA Aerotrain as “good… faster than before” following a test ride during a site visit at Terminal 1 of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Tuesday.
Anwar, who arrived at the terminal at 1pm, was joined by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, and other senior officials. The walkabout marked the official resumption of full aerotrain services, which had been suspended for refurbishment under a major infrastructure upgrade.
Aerotrain Back in Action After RM456 Million Upgrade
The fully modernised, driverless aerotrain system is part of MAHB’s RM742 million Airport Regeneration Plan, designed to future-proof KLIA as a leading regional aviation hub. The system began operating earlier on Tuesday following six months of intensive testing and safety certification.
“The revamped system reflects our commitment to enhancing KLIA’s passenger experience and operational resilience,” said Mohd Izani.
The upgrade features Alstom Innovia APM 300R train sets, with each three-car unit capable of transporting up to 270 passengers at speeds of up to 56 km/h, slashing the travel time between the main terminal and satellite terminal to under three minutes.
Key Enhancements: Speed, Safety, and Reliability
Equipped with advanced condition monitoring systems, the new trains are built for reliability and minimal service disruptions. The system has undergone rigorous technical and safety assessments by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) between January and June 2025.
KLIA Terminal 1 currently handles over 100,000 passenger movements daily, with the aerotrain serving as a crucial transit connection—particularly for international passengers flying long-haul routes through the Satellite Terminal.
Boosting Readiness for Visit Malaysia Year 2026
With the aerotrain now fully operational, MAHB said the upgrade significantly enhances KLIA’s preparedness to manage increased traffic, especially as Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaches. The initiative also aligns with KLIA’s goal of recovering to pre-pandemic passenger volumes and maintaining its reputation as a world-class travel gateway.
