“Malaysia introduces the RM150 million SuRIA Home initiative, offering up to RM3,000 rebates for residential rooftop solar installations to help households reduce electricity bills.”
Kuala Lumpur, 22th May 2026, 2.30pm – The Malaysian government has launched the Sustainable Rebate and Incentive Assistance (SuRIA) Home programme, a new initiative aimed at helping households reduce electricity costs through rooftop solar adoption amid growing concerns over global energy security and rising energy prices.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Fadillah Yusof, announced that the government has allocated RM150 million for the programme, which offers rebates to eligible homeowners installing residential solar systems.
Up to RM3,000 rebate for residential solar installations
Under the SuRIA Home initiative, homeowners participating in the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) can receive a rebate of RM600 per 1kWac of installed solar capacity.
Eligible applicants can claim up to RM3,000, equivalent to a 5kWac rooftop solar system.
According to Fadillah, the programme is expected to benefit between 45,000 and 50,000 households nationwide, while supporting the installation of approximately 250MW of cumulative residential solar capacity.
Programme aims to accelerate rooftop solar adoption
The initiative forms part of Malaysia’s broader energy transition agenda, encouraging greater adoption of renewable energy among residential consumers.
The programme is open to Solar ATAP installations that achieve commercial operation status by Dec 31, 2026, or until the allocated 250MW quota is fully subscribed, whichever comes first.
Applications for rebates will begin on June 1, 2026, and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Who is eligible?
The rebate is available exclusively to:
- Malaysian citizens
- Individual domestic low-voltage (LV) electricity consumers
- Homeowners whose Solar ATAP systems have successfully commenced operations with Tenaga Nasional Berhad
To ensure fair distribution, each eligible individual is limited to one rebate claim.
Government warns against abuse of incentive scheme
The government has also warned that any misuse of the application process will be dealt with strictly.
According to the ministry, solar service providers or applicants found abusing systems managed by Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia and TNB may face blacklisting from future renewable energy incentive programmes.
Supporting Malaysia’s energy resilience
The launch comes as countries worldwide seek to strengthen energy resilience amid geopolitical tensions and volatility in global fuel markets.
Industry observers believe the SuRIA Home programme could accelerate residential solar adoption while helping households manage rising electricity costs and contribute to Malaysia’s clean energy transition goals.
