“Pahang is launching a high-tech zone in Kuantan to attract AI, automation, and big data firms. The state also eyes floating solar farms and renewable energy talent to support its net zero target by 2030.“
Pahang, 18th June 2025, 02.40pm – The Pahang state government has announced plans to establish a dedicated high-tech zone in Kuantan to attract companies in artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and big data, in a move to position the east coast as a new digital economy hub.
The upcoming Pahang High-Tech Zone will serve as a strategic platform for advanced technology investments and foster the growth of AI-focused startups and talent, said Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib, Chairman of the State Investment, Industrial Development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee.
“We aim to create an ecosystem that draws both tech companies and AI talent to Pahang. This initiative will help us retain and develop homegrown innovators, rather than seeing them relocate to the Klang Valley or overseas,” he said.
The proposed zone is currently planned for Kuantan, with the location subject to confirmation. Nizar shared the update during the closing ceremony of the Speed GCPV (Grid-Connected Photovoltaic) programme and launch of the AI for Productivity Transformation initiative held at the Pahang Skills Development Centre on Tuesday.
Nizar also called for collaboration between Pahang Skills Development Centre and Yayasan Pahang to draw more tech companies and build a robust AI talent pipeline.
“We must prepare to embrace both the challenges and opportunities brought by AI. The state will explore incentives to ensure AI firms see Pahang as a viable base—not just the Klang Valley,” he added.
Floating Solar Farm in the Pipeline
As part of the state’s green energy transition, Nizar revealed that the government is exploring the development of floating solar farms, also known as floating photovoltaics (FPV), to support Pahang’s net zero carbon goal by 2030.
“The project will be built on a suitable lake or dam, with completion expected in two years. This will be a key step in diversifying Pahang’s renewable energy portfolio,” he said.
To support this clean energy initiative, the state is also focusing on developing solar technicians and specialists. To date, 288 individuals have undergone training through the Speed GCPV programme, Nizar noted.
