“Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calls on DBKL to focus on redeveloping the deteriorating Dato Keramat Market, assigning immediate action to relevant officials.”
Kuala Lumpur, 29th July 2024, 11.12am – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to prioritize the redevelopment of the deteriorating Dato Keramat Market.
He instructed Titiwangsa Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who is also Minister of Plantation and Commodities, and KL Mayor Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh to take necessary actions.
“I know that DBKL previously handed the Dato Keramat Market to a private company, but it failed. Now that DBKL has resumed control, we need to focus on its redevelopment due to its poor condition,” he stated.
“Datuk Seri Johari Ghani and the mayor are also present, and I have informed them that we must prioritize this matter, as the market’s poor condition is unsustainable,” he told reporters after Friday prayers at Masjid Ibnu Mas’ud, Jalan Damai.
Earlier, the Prime Minister visited the nearby Dato Keramat Market and the Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz foodcourt.
He mentioned that the Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz foodcourt is currently undergoing upgrades, which are expected to be completed by October this year.
Meanwhile, Johari stated that the issue with the previous contractor assigned to redevelop the Dato Keramat Market has been resolved, and the project has been handed back to DBKL.
“The developer had pledged to redevelop the market, but after six years, no progress was made.
“When they failed to act, DBKL was unable to intervene because a 10% deposit had already been paid for the land. Upon my election as Titiwangsa MP, I urged DBKL to withdraw from the project,” he explained.
Johari mentioned that it is now DBKL’s responsibility to proceed with the redevelopment of the market.
Accompanying the Prime Minister on the visit were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr. Zaliha Mustafa.
