“Terengganu requires over RM2.4 billion to build breakwaters across 34 locations to combat severe coastal erosion, with urgent funding sought for immediate repairs in Kuala Nerus.“
Kuala Lumpur, 15th Jan 2025, 02.30pm – Terengganu’s Infrastructure, Utilities, and Rural Development Committee Chairman, Hanafiah Mat, announced that the state needs over RM2.4 billion to construct breakwaters to address worsening coastal erosion across 34 affected areas.
The estimated cost stems from breakwater construction rates of RM5 million to RM10 million per kilometre to safeguard approximately 244 km of coastline, particularly vulnerable during the northeast monsoon.
“The final cost depends on the materials used—whether concrete, tetrapods, or gabions—and the severity of erosion at each site,” Hanafiah explained.
He urged the Federal Government to approve additional funding to mitigate critical erosion hotspots, including Kuala Nerus.
Separately, the state has requested RM600,000 through the Public Works Department under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS) for immediate road repairs and erosion control in Kampung Tanjung Batu Rakit, Kuala Nerus.
Pending approval, construction of a 400-metre rock revetment structure, positioned 1.5 metres from the road shoulder, is expected to begin in three to four weeks, depending on wave conditions.
This urgent intervention aims to prevent further damage while awaiting long-term breakwater solutions.
